Hi,
I am trying to install Oracle 8.1.7 on Red Hat Linux 7.2. I have set up all environment parameters correctly and varified.
When I start runInstaller, it gives me following error:

I have the same problem. I have read Oracle 8.1.7 release 3 doesn't work with the kernel of RedHat 7.2, but I don`t want to believe that. I think that something in the jdk 1.1.8 is wrong. If you can solve this problem, say to me, please.
Thank you.

unset LANG

or

in the installation dir type:

env -u LANG /.runInstaller

That's all, good luck.

This is a bit late from your posting, but I figure that this might help other people later on, so I'll give you the answer:

If you are getting the error ending in libjava.so. Processing terminated error, and are running runInstaller with LANG unset, this is likely your problem as well.

As is typical on many servers destined for database use, you probably have a minimal or stripped-down configuration on this box. This "best practice", in reality, is the reason this is a common issue for Oracle, and is posted on so many forums and news groups. The resolution is to add a minimal X system to this server, at least while performing the installation.

While on RedHat this may or not be so trivial, but on SuSE, the fast solution is to add the "minimum X11 system" configuration to your database server using Yast, Package Management, Load Configuration. You can then easily go back after the install and remove this configuration to get rid of these X11 packages after they are no longer needed.

Hope this helps.

Hi, it's quite late for an answer but I'll post it for those who find this page through an search engine (like me!):

1st you have to set the following environment variable:
$> export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5

2nd you have to unset your language variable:
$> unset LANG

That's all and the ionstaller should work fine. Hope that helps!

Bye Thomas

I have a problem similar to what's listed here and have found all the articles and read them carefully, but the DISPLAY variable I am using is the dummy interface 127.0.0.1 as I have a standalone PC/workstation. I am using 7.2 but ahve 7.1 as well. I still get "map failed" when I try to run the Installer. Any advice on this?
